Cddb (freebd lookup)

  • i currently have a number of older albums that i am just having fits with when trying to get album info.

ex. quiet riot greatest hits, remo williams the adventure begins soundtrack.

now while my id3 tag info is correct i find that the search for album info is shadey at best even on a manual search. yet i can goto freedb and do a search for "remo williams" and it gives me 2 options, the first of which is my album. when i put the exact entry in the manual search i come up with 7 pages of garbage that arent even close to what i have.

so is there a method we can tweak this search or an alternate ip (i refer to the one in xboxmediacenter.xml) to see if we can ge this a little closer to the actual album?

  • the quickest way i have found is using dr tag. you can download a trial for free that will let you make 50 saves before restarting it (which is plenty for about 2-3 albums).

if you find a track listing anywhere on the web (i use amazon.co.jp for mine) then save it as a text file.

dr tag allows you to import track listings from a .txt file and will rename all the tags accordingly.

sometimes it makes a mistake, but you can swap different fields with the click of a button.

i can't remember the url of the dr tag website off my head, but a quick search of google should sort you out.

  • thanks tom. i will google it tonite. i have the text i need to put for the track. like you said, i will try to import that using this tool. afer this, when u click info on xbmc for the track, will it still go to website to lookup? how do u make sure it does not do that and instead read this imported text?

    thanks
    v

  • album info is done via allmusic.com. it searches on just the album name - not sure whether this can be changed. we'd need to find out the syntax for the search by album name and artist name (if available).

  • afaik, xbmc won't rename the tags. the cddb database only does that when you insert a cd i think. at least, it has never done it for me.

usually if i copy a cd via xbmc, i like to edit the tags manually afterwards anyway. because the cddb is edited by the public, there can be a lot of mistakes with grammar, punctuation and capitalisation etc... still, it's a good start.

  • hey tom

i have a similar need. once you find the cd info, how do you put that on your info file for the track?

i need to add some custom track info for some compositions that are not listed on allmusic or freedb. any suggestions?

  • actually scrap that request... after checking freedb, it seems that the japanese track listings are written mostly in english, not japanese and so i would have to trans/'>translate them myself anyway. it's easier to just do it myself with the album info from amazon.co.jp

  • yeah, is there a way to switch getting the track listings to freedb? i know that allmusic is a much 'neater' site, but freedb seems to have a lot more listings (although no reviews)... also, if it doesn't have something, then it's at least possible to upload the details (something that you can't do on allmusic i believe).

anyway, the reason for my asking is that i have a lot of japanese cds. both mine and my girlfriends and some of hers are relatively old. i can find the information on freedb no problem, but i can't find anything relevant on allmusic.
