Giving up on upconversion and play dvd
i am at the brink of giving up on this play dvd option and the ability to watch movies at anything more than 480i.
its been very frustrating. ive followed the advice from the knowledgable ones here. somehow my result has been very incosistant.
9 out of 10 dvd's from netflix, just do not start if you click play dvd after setting xbmc as the default player. since this is the only way i could watch movies at higher than 480i resolution, i am stumped.
i was willing to use dvd2xbox and write the movie into the hardrive and then try to startup by clicking ifo file. even that, after fully copying the file, all i get is a mangled video image on the screen. this is a new behavior since my upgrade to recent build.
ive set the cache settings as per your advice at 4mb. what more should i do? is there anyway i can consistantly be able to use play dvd option at higher resolution like 720p using xbmc as default player?

if you rip the movie with dvd shrink 3.2 (put that exact phrase in google, there you go!), directly from the dvd to your pc's hard drive. it will take a few minutes to analyze it, then switch to the re-author mode tab. choose the main movie and drag it onto the left section. choose the compression tab, and select the audio/subtitle streams you want. click the backup button, and in about a half an hour, you'll have a decrypted "just the movie" rip in a directory on your computer. (my pc is a p.o.s. 800mhz, you aren't re-encoding the movie so it doesn't take that long, my 2.4 xeon at work does it in like 3 minutes! drool.)
either share that directory (i.e. c:\video\kill bill vol. 1\, share out the c:\video) and set that up in xbmc, or ftp the movie to the xbox, then play it.
if you don't want the library, delete it when you're done. if you're worried about the legality of it, don't return the physical disk until you're done watching the rip ;-)
my drive has problems watching dvd's from lackluster online, mostly because the disks are beaten up, but my drive is twitchy and won't work when the layer change happens. otherwise... it plays them at 1080i very nicely.

i do have avalaunch but dont use it as my dash. how do you launch dvd movie from avalaunch. i looked around and did not find any. also it did not start the dvd when i fed the tray. is there a launch dvd menu on that dash? i know evox has something like that.
not sure why they don't start, but many downloaded movies are horribly messed up after the ripping process and refuse to play. if you don't mind burning the dvd's to disk, i think avalaunch has an dvdplayer included that can play in atleast 480p (think 720p too). or atleast they used to have..
this should only be a temporary solution, untill our dvdplayer is ready for release thou.. and no, i can't give you an eta on when it will be released.
i never realized until farily recently that xbmc can upscaled regular dvds...that is so shweeett.....i'm wondering....regular xvids too? no matter the resolution? do they look noticeably better?
thanks for the feedback. iam thrilled to know that you guys are working on a player at the momement. meanwhile, i will try to see what avalaunch has. are you suggesting that, just like xbmc, if i dont put any entry for default dvd player, avalaunch is capable of playng at 480p?
is there anything i can do to bypass the encryption? all i want is to be able to watch at upconverted scale. ive no intention to create my own library here. please dont mistake me here.

i commend you for your patience. i gave avalaunch up when it all of a sudden started freezing up on me and i found out this was a known problem that has not been fixed to this day as far i know.
xbox scene avalaunch bug (http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=358434&st=15) that and the myriad of useless funtions for windows users. the only thing i really appreciated about it was the fast qwiz transfers but to tell you the truth, i haven't even noticed a drop in ftp speeds since switching to xbmc for dash. now, i'll never go back; just use this shweet program to much to waste my time booting into something else
