Replacing 9.0kw shower with 8.5kw?

  • We've got a mira sport shower rated at 9.0kw which is on the way out, the thermostat isn't working properly.
Do I have to replace it with another 9.0kw or can I replace with an 8.5kw?

  • you can fit any shower you like as long as it doe`s not go over 9.kw ...but the mira sport is the best shower out there

  • The existing circuit will be ok for any wattage up to 9kw. There is a tremendous amount of competition to sell electric showers these days.
Whilst you can get all singing all dancing showers with lights and chrome etc., at the end of the day the wattage determines the amount of available flow. Therefor all showers of the same wattage are identical in performance.
My plan would be to look at the big DIY stores for own brand showers.
They are mostly made by Triton or Gainsborough, so the guts are the same as the expensive models. It's all to do with customer perception.

  • Any shower up to the current 9KW will be fine.
Just dont be tempted to go over, as your cable may not be heavy enough.

  • If it was me I would replace the thermostat, ( I assume you mean cut out as there is no thermostat as such fitted) much cheaper. However if you want to replace it with a new model anything up to 9.0kw should be ok. Before proceeding I suggest you compare the entry points for water and electrical supplies, if these are not in similar locations you could have problems. If you want to fit a bigger shower, 10.5kw? then you will first have to check that the cable size and MCB are of sufficient capacity.
